How to reduce your child's phone addiction

Reels till midnight, Free Fire before homework, tantrums when the phone is taken away. You are not alone, and you don't need to ban the phone. Here is a calm, step-by-step plan that Indian families can start this week.

Updated . Based on Indian Academy of Pediatrics and WHO guidance. · हिंदी में पढ़ें

The short answer

  • Agree the rules together: when, how long and which apps. Write them down.
  • Make phone-free times: meals, the bedroom, and the last hour before sleep.
  • Cut down step by step, not overnight, and replace screen time with play, sport or hobbies.
  • Let a tool keep the rules so you aren't the "bad guy" every evening.
  • Follow the rules yourself. Children copy what parents do, not what they say.

Is it really addiction? Signs to watch

Most children who love their phone are not "addicted". It becomes a problem when the phone starts to push out the rest of life. Watch for these signs over a few weeks, not one bad day:

  • Sleeping late because of the phone, or tired and sleepy in school
  • Marks dropping, or homework left unfinished
  • Anger, crying or fights when asked to stop
  • Losing interest in outdoor play, friends or old hobbies
  • Hiding use, lying about time spent, or using the phone secretly at night
  • Trying to cut down but not managing to

The World Health Organization recognises gaming disorder as a condition, but only when loss of control and harm to daily life last for about 12 months, and it affects a small share of gamers. If a few of the signs above fit, the steps below are the right place to start. If many fit and limits don't help, see when to get help.

How much screen time is okay?

The Indian Academy of Pediatrics (IAP) published these guidelines in 2021:

AgeScreen timeAlso make sure of
Under 2 yearsNo screens (video calls with family are fine)No phone while feeding
2 to 5 yearsUp to 1 hour a day, with an adult, 20–30 minutes at a time3 hours of active play, 10–14 hours of sleep
5 to 10 yearsLess than 2 hours a day, including homework on screens1 hour of outdoor activity, 9–12 hours of sleep, no personal phone
10 to 18 yearsNo fixed limit, but screens must not cut into the basics8–9 hours of sleep, 1 hour outdoors, studies, meals, family time

For every age: no screens during meals, no devices in the bedroom, and screens off one hour before bedtime.

A 7-step plan to cut phone time

  1. Check the real numbers for one week

Don't guess. Look at how many hours your child actually spends, and on which apps. Often one or two apps (a game, Reels, YouTube Shorts) take most of the time. That's where to start.

  2. Talk, then agree a family plan

Pick a calm moment, not the middle of a fight. Ask what they enjoy on the phone and what they'd like to do more of. Agree the rules together, such as "games after homework, 5 to 6 PM" and "no phone at the dinner table". Write them down and put them on the fridge.

  3. Set phone-free zones and times

Meals, the bedroom and the hour before sleep. Phones charge outside the bedroom at night, including yours. Sleep is the first thing late-night phone use takes away.

  4. Cut down step by step

If your child is on the phone for 5 hours, a sudden drop to 1 hour usually ends in a fight. Cut 15 to 30 minutes each week until you reach the agreed limit. Expect complaints in the first week or two. Stay consistent.

  5. Replace, don't just remove

Boredom pulls children back to the phone. Plan what fills the time: cricket or cycling in the evening, a hobby class, board games, cooking together, a library card. At least one hour of physical activity a day also helps sleep.

  6. Let a tool keep the rules

Reminding and arguing every evening wears everyone out. A parental control app enforces what you agreed, so the phone stops at 9 PM and you don't have to snatch it.

  7. Lead by example

Keep your own phone away at meals and family time. Try a daily "digital fast" when the whole family puts phones away, even for 40 minutes. Children follow what they see.

Rules that work by age

Ages 5 to 10

  • Use a parent's phone or a shared family tablet, not their own phone.
  • Screen time in the living room, where you can see it.
  • Choose apps and videos together; avoid autoplay.

Ages 10 to 13

  • If they get a phone, set it up with limits from day one. Adding rules later is harder.
  • Give a daily limit for games and social media, and keep study apps open.
  • Bedtime lock on school nights.

Teenagers (14 to 18)

  • Agree limits with them, not for them. Explain why sleep and studies come first.
  • Give more freedom as they show they can manage it, such as extra time on weekends.
  • Be open: tell them which controls are on. Secret spying breaks trust.

How SafeParent helps you keep the rules

SafeParent runs on your child's Android phone, and you set everything from yours. It turns your family plan into rules the phone follows:

Your family ruleWhat to turn on in SafeParent
"See how much time actually goes"Usage by app for today, this week and this month
"2 hours a day in total"Daily screen time limit
"Games only 5 to 6 PM"App blocker: daily limit and allowed hours for each app
"No phone after 9:30 PM"Bedtime lock on a nightly schedule
"Phones away at dinner"Remote lock from your phone, unlock when you're done
"Ask if you need more time"Your child requests +15, +30 or +60 minutes; you approve or deny
"No Reels on the browser either"Web filter: social media, games and adult content categories

Emergency calls always work, and up to 3 saved contacts stay reachable during locks. SafeParent costs ₹300/month or ₹3,000/year in India for up to 5 children, after a 7-day free trial. See all features · How to block Free Fire & Instagram

What usually backfires

  • Snatching the phone in anger. It turns the phone into a battle, and children find ways around it.
  • Using the phone to keep children quiet at meals, in the car or in restaurants. It builds the habit you're trying to break.
  • Giving phone time as the main reward. It makes the phone feel even more valuable.
  • Shaming or comparing with other children. Talk about the habit, not about your child being "bad".
  • Rules for children only. If parents scroll at dinner, children notice.

When to get help

Talk to your paediatrician or a mental health professional if, even after limits:

  • sleep, studies or friendships keep getting worse,
  • your child becomes aggressive, very low or withdrawn when the phone is taken away,
  • you see signs of cyberbullying, online harassment or contact with strangers.

In India you can also call Tele-MANAS on 14416, the government's free mental health helpline. NIMHANS in Bengaluru runs the SHUT clinic (Service for Healthy Use of Technology), which also supports parents. To report cybercrime, use cybercrime.gov.in or call 1930.

Questions parents ask

Should I take the phone away completely?

Usually not. A sudden ban often leads to secret use or a borrowed phone. Agreed rules, a step-by-step cut and good alternatives work better and last longer.

How long until things change?

The first one or two weeks are the hardest. If the rules stay the same every day, most families find the new routine feels normal within a few weeks.

My child needs the phone for online classes and homework.

Keep study apps open and limit games and social media separately. With SafeParent each app gets its own limit and allowed hours, so classes aren't affected.

Is it okay to use parental controls on a teenager?

Yes, if you are open about it. Tell your teen which controls are on and why, and loosen them as they show they can manage. Controls work best as support for an agreement, not as a replacement for talking.
